As a field, we are still engaged in discussions about best practice for how to handle publications for which co-authors don’t currently have the data (and, as with this publication, may never have had the data). I would like to learn from these discussions in our field about how best to approach these situations and handle the article, without acting prematurely. My aims are to protect research integrity and avoid undue harm to individuals.
