I conducted an internal audit of this paper with input from co-authors. I have not posted the audit on OSF because we are currently in the process of retracting this paper. The audit identified the following:
- The data for reproducing the results for each study in the paper were posted on OSF, but the raw data for the Pilot Study and Studies 1a, 1b, and 2 were not found. Most of these studies (the pilot, 1a-b) were conducted more than 10 years ago. The Pilot Study and Study 2 were run on MTurk using Qualtrics, whereas Studies 1a-b were run in the lab (and also used Qualtrics).
- Unexplained issues were identified in the posted datasets for Studies 1a and 1b.
- Francesca Gino's and Mike Norton's lab manager (Mindi Rock) collected the pilot study data. Those data are not central to the paper's hypotheses.
- There is uncertainty regarding the data provenance for Study 1b.
- I was the person responsible for collecting data and analyzing Studies 3 and 4 in the paper, along with Jane Risen who was the faculty PI for those studies at the time. I did not view or handle the data from the other studies beyond combining the cleaned datasets (which were emailed to me) in order to post them on OSF after the paper was already published.

Update on 12/13/23: The request for retraction from all authors was submitted to the journal on 10/18/23. The journal requested more detailed contribution information, which we reported on 11/6/23. The journal is still processing the retraction as of 12/13/23.
Update on 12/29/23: I posted the rawest form of the data from Studies 1a, 1b, and 2 that I have on OSF here: https://osf.io/8qeht. It was emailed to me on 8/15/2016 by AWB.
I had access to the data for Studies 3 and 4, which were collected by Juliana Schroeder.
I did not view or handle data from any other studies.
